The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Education Secretariat has intensified monitoring of third-term promotion examinations in public schools across the six Area Councils of the Territory as part of efforts to improve education quality and learning outcomes.
The Director of the Education Resource Centre (ERC), Dr. Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, who led the monitoring exercise, said the initiative aims to ensure compliance with educational standards, protect the credibility of examinations, and promote effective teaching and learning.
She explained that end-of-session promotion examinations are important in determining students’ progression to the next class and must therefore be conducted in a fair and transparent manner.
Dr. Abdulrahim said the ERC, which is responsible for developing examination questions for public senior secondary schools in the FCT, has the responsibility to monitor the process, prevent examination malpractice, and maintain the integrity of assessments.
She added that regular monitoring helps identify challenges affecting schools and provides opportunities to improve the education system.
The Director commended the Principal of Government Science Technical College (GSTC), Mr. Musa Kuta, for introducing a seating arrangement that allows SS1 and SS2 students to write examinations in the same hall, describing the approach as a measure that discourages malpractice and promotes discipline among students.
She noted that monitoring teams also engage with school principals, teachers, and students to understand challenges facing schools and provide recommendations for improvement.
The FCT Administration, under the leadership of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was also commended for prioritising education through school renovations, improved infrastructure, and stronger quality assurance mechanisms.
Meanwhile, the Principal of GSTC, Mr. Musa Kuta, praised the ERC for its commitment to monitoring examinations and maintaining credible assessment processes across public schools in the FCT.
