The Federal Government has stopped its plan to increase the registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The Ministry of Education said the decision was made after Nigerians and education stakeholders raised concerns about the proposed fee increase.
In a statement, the ministry said it had withdrawn the letter issued on June 18, 2026, which announced the planned adjustment, to allow for further review and consultation.
The government had earlier proposed increasing the fees because of rising costs involved in organising the examinations.
These costs include transportation, security, printing of examination materials, technology, and quality control.
However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the plan should be suspended until more discussions are held with relevant groups.
The ministry said it will consult with examination bodies, state education ministries, school owners, parents’ groups, labour unions, and other education stakeholders before making a final decision.
It assured Nigerians that the proposed increase will not take effect until the consultation process is completed.
The government said it remains committed to making education affordable and ensuring that students have fair access to quality education.
It also promised to keep the public updated on any future decision.
