The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has called on government authorities to take urgent action to address rising insecurity across Nigeria, protect schools, and improve access to clean water in Abuja.
The call was made during a congress held on June 6, 2026, in Abuja, where over 500 journalists gathered to discuss key national issues affecting security, governance, and the media profession.

In a statement released after the meeting, the journalists expressed serious concern about the growing insecurity in the FCT and other parts of the country.
They urged security agencies to do more to protect lives and property and to restore public confidence.
The NUJ also stressed the importance of the media in promoting accountability and accurate reporting.
They promised to continue reporting security issues responsibly while also encouraging journalists to prioritize their safety in the line of duty.
The congress also demanded better communication from security agencies, saying official reports should reflect the real situation on the ground, especially in cases of kidnapping and violent attacks.
They said clear and honest communication is important for public trust.Education security was another major issue discussed.
The journalists called for full implementation of the Safe School Initiative, warning that attacks on schools and student kidnappings pose a serious threat to the country’s future.
They urged government to strengthen school security through fencing, deployment of security officers, and other safety measures.
They also raised concern about water shortages in parts of the FCT, calling on the FCT Administration and relevant agencies to urgently address the problem affecting residents.
The journalists further appealed to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to strengthen cooperation with the media to improve public communication and security reporting.
Finally, the NUJ encouraged its national leadership to organize regular training for journalists on security reporting to help them work more safely and effectively.
The congress was described as one of the most important gatherings of journalists in Abuja this year, with a strong focus on improving national security, public accountability, and development.
