The Nigeria Police Force says it will improve its Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to make it easier and faster for people to report complaints against police officers.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem, announced this during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council in Abuja.

Edem said the CRU is the police’s main online platform for receiving and handling complaints from the public.

The unit operates 24 hours a day and deals with cases such as extortion, harassment, misconduct, and human rights abuses involving police officers.

He explained that the upgrades will help reduce response time, improve the tracking of complaints, and make the process more transparent.

According to him, the changes are part of the Inspector-General of Police’s efforts to reform the Force and rebuild public trust.

Edem also announced plans to hold a meeting with journalists under Zone 7 Command to improve cooperation between the police and the media.

He said accurate reporting by journalists would help the public understand the ongoing reforms and hold institutions accountable.

Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, welcomed the planned improvements and promised that journalists would work with the police to raise public awareness of the CRU.

She said the media would also report citizens’ complaints and monitor how they are handled.

Both the police and the NUJ agreed that a stronger CRU and closer media collaboration would improve transparency, strengthen accountability, and help build public confidence in the police.
