Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja for permission to summon the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, to testify in his cybercrime and criminal defamation case.
The request was made during Wednesday’s court session after a DSS officer, Uwem Davies, told the court that he acted on the instructions of the DSS Director-General when he wrote a letter asking Sowore to remove some social media posts about President Bola Tinubu.
Sowore’s lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), argued that the witness could not answer some important questions during cross-examination.
He said this made it necessary for the DSS Director-General to appear before the court.
The defence also told the court that an earlier attempt to summon Bayo Onanuga failed because court officials were unable to serve him with the necessary legal documents.
While giving evidence, Davies confirmed that he wrote a letter dated January 22 directing Sowore to delete certain social media posts.
He said he did so on the instruction of the DSS Director-General because the posts were considered capable of causing tension.
However, Davies denied writing another letter dated September 7, 2025, which was sent to Meta.
He said the letter was written by a retired DSS officer, B. Bamigboye.
The court adjourned the case until July 28 for the continuation of the defence’s case.
