A United States Senator, Ted Cruz, has alleged that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is focusing on hiring American lobbyists instead of addressing the reported persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Cruz said Nigerian officials had responded to concerns from the United States with a public relations campaign rather than taking action.
The senator recalled that he introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act, 2025, a bill that seeks to impose sanctions on Nigerian government officials accused of supporting attacks on Christians and enforcing blasphemy laws.
Cruz claimed that some Nigerian officials had created conditions that allowed violence against Christians and other religious minorities by enforcing blasphemy and Sharia laws while failing to stop attacks by extremist groups.
He said the U.S. government knows the officials involved and that he has continued to push for sanctions through his proposed bill.
He also claimed that President Donald Trump had ordered military action in response to the situation.
The senator further alleged that the Nigerian government believes it can continue its current approach without consequences, adding that he was pleased with President Trump’s response to the reported persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
