Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, saying political leaders are more focused on the 2027 elections than on protecting citizens.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi said many schoolchildren kidnapped in Borno and Oyo States are still in captivity weeks after their abduction, with no meaningful progress in securing their release.

He criticised what he described as a focus on political announcements instead of urgent rescue efforts.
Obi also listed several recent attacks across the country, including the killing and injury of residents in Plateau State, kidnappings in Kogi State where over 25 people were abducted, and the killing of two police officers in Anambra State.
He further mentioned the abduction of dozens of students and teachers in Oyo State, as well as the kidnapping of nearly 50 pupils in Borno State by suspected insurgents.
According to him, these repeated attacks show that insecurity in the country is getting worse and requires urgent action.
Obi warned that it is troubling for such incidents to continue in a country not officially at war, and called on leaders to prioritise the safety of citizens, especially children, over political ambitions.
