President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for members of Nigeria’s armed forces, with about 250,000 personnel expected to benefit.

According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the new salary structure will take effect from September 1, 2026.

Under the arrangement, officers above the rank of colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.

Personnel from colonel to warrant officer will get a 50 per cent raise, while those from private to staff sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent increase.

The new package will increase the annual salary bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion.

President Tinubu said the salary review reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in tackling banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.

He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to modernise the armed forces by providing the necessary weapons and technology, stressing that security remains a key priority for national development.

The President also urged members of the armed forces to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s appreciation for their service and dedication.
