The Nigerian Army has deployed 86 soldiers to Guinea-Bissau to take part in a peacekeeping mission under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a statement, the Army said the soldiers departed from Abuja and arrived safely in Guinea-Bissau, where they will begin their mission.
The Army said the deployment shows Nigeria’s continued commitment to promoting peace and security across West Africa.
It added that Nigeria remains one of the leading African countries contributing troops to peacekeeping operations organised by ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations.
According to the Army, the mission will help strengthen security, promote peace, and support stability in Guinea-Bissau, a country that has experienced years of political instability and military coups.
Nigeria has a long history of sending troops on peacekeeping missions to countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau.
The deployment comes as Nigeria continues to face security challenges at home, including bandit attacks and kidnappings for ransom in different parts of the country.
