More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing economic hardship, insecurity and other challenges facing Nigerians.
The clerics made the call in a communique issued after a national conference held in Kano on Sunday.
The conference focused on the state of the country under Tinubu and the 2027 elections. The clerics, under the group Ko Da Naka…For the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development, in partnership with the AFAQ Educational Foundation, criticised the government’s economic policies.
They said the removal of fuel subsidy, changes to the naira exchange rate, higher electricity tariffs and tax reforms had increased hardship for ordinary Nigerians.
The group said the government should review the policies and address rising living costs and unemployment.
It warned that if the policies remain unchanged, Nigerians should reject Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The clerics also expressed concern over killings, kidnappings and terrorism, particularly in the North-West and other parts of the country.
They urged the government to take urgent steps to improve security.
They advised Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 race, saying that if he refuses, Nigerians should reject his candidacy and choose leaders they believe can provide better governance.
