The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, has declared an indefinite strike across the Federal Capital Territory from Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
The union said the strike followed the failure of the FCT Administration (FCTA) to resolve longstanding problems affecting teachers, including promotion delays, career stagnation and the redeployment of school directors.
The NLC is demanding that the FCTA remove the vacancy condition for teachers’ promotion and allow teachers who were due for promotion in 2025 to take the examination with the 2026 candidates.
It also wants the withdrawal of redeployment and demotion letters issued to some school directors, as well as the dissolution of the management teams of the FCT Secondary Education Board and FCT Universal Basic Education Board.
The union described the FCTA’s response to its demands as inadequate and directed workers in government offices, schools, hospitals and other establishments to withdraw their services until the issues are resolved.
