Akpabio’s Praise for NILDS DG Will Not Stop House Investigation – ALDRAP

The Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) says that praise from Senate President Godswill Akpabio for the Director-General of National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, will not stop the ongoing investigation by the House of Representatives.

In a statement released on June 6, 2026, ALDRAP said the Senate President has the right to praise Prof. Sulaiman for his work.

However, the group said such praise does not remove the House of Representatives’ duty to investigate how public funds are managed.

According to ALDRAP, the House Public Accounts Committee, working with the Auditor-General of the Federation, has the constitutional power to examine government spending and ensure accountability.

The group said the investigation is looking into the source of two amounts of money—₦50 million and ₦20 million—allegedly linked to Prof. Sulaiman.

ALDRAP claimed these amounts are higher than his annual earnings as a public official and therefore require explanation.

ALDRAP described the investigation as a normal accountability process.

The group compared it to a student who performs well in many subjects but fails Mathematics, saying that success in other areas does not remove the need to address concerns in one important area.

The association said only a detailed forensic audit can determine whether public funds at NILDS were properly managed.

ALDRAP also revealed that it submitted the petition that led to the House investigation and urged Nigerians to allow the process to continue without interference.

The group further argued that no individual or institution—including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the courts, or the Ooni of Ife—has the power to stop the House of Representatives from carrying out its constitutional duties while the investigation is ongoing.

According to ALDRAP, any challenge to the outcome of the investigation can only be made after the National Assembly completes its work.

The House of Representatives has not yet announced the final outcome of the investigation.

Meanwhile, Prof. Sulaiman continues to receive praise from some people for his leadership of NILDS and his contributions to legislative and democratic studies in Nigeria.
