US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed during a meeting in Beijing that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open for global energy supplies, the White House said on Thursday.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major route for global oil and gas shipments, but shipping activities have been disrupted since the Iran war began on February 28.

According to the White House, both leaders agreed that keeping the waterway open is important for the free flow of energy around the world.

China is heavily affected by the disruption because more than half of its imported crude oil from the Middle East passes through the strait.

The White House also said Xi showed interest in buying more American oil to reduce China’s dependence on the route in the future, although China’s official statement did not mention this.

The meeting also touched on wider US-China relations, though the White House statement did not mention discussions on Taiwan, a sensitive issue between both countries.
