The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has assured Nigerians that recovered and forfeited assets will not be mismanaged under his leadership.
Olukoyede spoke on Tuesday amid calls for better management of assets recovered from people suspected of financial crimes.
He rejected calls for the creation of a single agency to manage all recovered assets in Nigeria.
He said similar arrangements in countries such as the United Kingdom and South Africa had not worked effectively.
According to him, more than 20 government agencies have legal powers to recover assets, making it difficult for one agency to take control of all of them.
Olukoyede said the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) already provides rules for government agencies to manage and account for assets recovered under their mandates.
He said the EFCC publishes information about its recovered assets on its website and regularly submits its annual reports to the National Assembly.
The EFCC chairman also challenged other agencies that recover assets to properly account for them.
He assured Nigerians that “not a pin nor a penny” of recovered assets would be mismanaged under his watch.
