A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan can contest in the 2027 presidential election.

The judgment was delivered on Tuesday by Justice Peter Lifu.

The judge said Jonathan has the legal right to take part in the election if he decides to run.

The case was filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who asked the court to stop Jonathan from contesting in 2027.

Jideobi also wanted the court to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.

According to the lawsuit, the court was asked to decide whether Jonathan is still qualified to run for president under the 1999 Constitution.

The ruling comes a few days after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party reportedly offered Jonathan a waiver to become the party’s only presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

More details are expected later.
