Thugs reportedly attacked the convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Tuesday along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway in Benue State.

The incident reportedly stopped Obi from visiting Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to sympathise with victims of the June 13, 2025 attack.

Obi had arrived in Makurdi in the morning and was travelling to Yelwata when the incident happened.

The Benue NDC Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem Ordedoo, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of mobilising the thugs to stop Obi.

He said Obi planned to meet victims and provide relief materials.

However, the Benue APC Publicity Secretary, Benedict Yaweh, denied the allegation.

He said the party was not aware of the attack and suggested that if an attack happened, it could have involved Obi’s supporters.

“We are a peace-loving party and we don’t involve in thuggery,” Yaweh said.

The June 13, 2025 attack in Yelwata killed scores of people and displaced many residents.

The state police command did not respond to calls seeking confirmation of Tuesday’s reported attack.
