The Silent Heroes Awards Initiative (SHA) has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his leadership, commitment to professionalism and efforts to strengthen public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The founder of SHA, Comrade Odita Sunday, gave the commendation in a statement issued in Abuja, noting that purposeful leadership, institutional reforms and community-focused policing were essential to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Odita said effective police leadership should go beyond issuing directives to include setting high professional standards, promoting accountability and ensuring that officers remained committed to protecting the lives and rights of citizens.

He stressed that the police needed leadership capable of inspiring personnel, strengthening institutions and improving the quality of service delivered to the public.

According to him, the office of the Inspector-General of Police carries significant responsibility, particularly at a time when Nigerians expect security agencies to be more responsive, professional and accountable.

“Leadership in the security sector goes beyond occupying an office or issuing directives. It is about setting standards, inspiring personnel, strengthening institutions and building public trust through professional conduct and measurable results,” Odita said.

He identified public trust as a critical factor in effective policing, explaining that sustained engagement between security agencies and the communities they serve could help prevent crime, improve intelligence gathering and strengthen security operations.

The SHA founder added that modern policing required a combination of intelligence-led operations, operational efficiency, respect for human rights and cooperation among relevant stakeholders.

He noted that strengthening relationships between police officers and members of the public would encourage residents to share useful information with security agencies, thereby supporting efforts to prevent and respond to criminal activities.

Odita also emphasised the importance of police personnel welfare, continuous professional training and improved operational capacity, saying these were necessary to motivate officers to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

He observed that police officers often work under difficult and dangerous conditions and therefore deserve adequate institutional support, professional recognition and leadership that encourages integrity and excellence.

“The men and women who serve in the security sector make enormous sacrifices, often away from the public spotlight. Recognising their service and encouraging exemplary leadership are important steps towards building stronger and more responsive institutions,” he said.

He explained that recognising outstanding service could encourage officers to maintain high professional standards while inspiring others to contribute positively to national security and development.

Odita further stated that the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative was established to recognise individuals whose leadership, service and contributions make meaningful differences in society, particularly in security, governance, community development and national advancement.

He said the initiative believed that celebrating excellence was an important way to promote responsible leadership, professionalism and a stronger commitment to public service.

According to him, recognition should not be based solely on titles or positions but should reflect an individual’s character, dedication to duty, institutional impact and contribution to humanity.

The SHA founder urged Nigerians to support efforts to strengthen the country’s security institutions, stressing that maintaining peace and security required cooperation among government agencies, communities, civil society organisations and the private sector.

He expressed optimism that sustained reforms, professional leadership and stronger partnerships between the police and citizens could contribute to improved public safety and greater confidence in law enforcement.

Odita reaffirmed the initiative’s commitment to promoting excellence, integrity and service, while encouraging public officials to remain focused on their responsibilities to Nigerians.

He added that the ultimate measure of leadership in the security sector should be its positive impact on citizens’ lives, the effectiveness of institutions and the level of public confidence in those responsible for protecting them.
