Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, escaped an attack after some gunmen opened fire on his convoy in Osogbo on Wednesday.
The incident happened shortly after the governor left the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, whom he had visited to present his Certificate of Return issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Reports from other media outlets confirmed that there was an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and security personnel accompanying the governor.
The shooting lasted for about 15 minutes before security operatives drove the attackers away.
No death or injury was reported.
A source said the shooting damaged part of the main entrance gate to the Ataoja’s palace.
The incident also caused panic among residents in the area, with some business owners closing their shops and fleeing to safer places.
Before the attack, Adeleke had received his Certificate of Return from INEC after winning the Osun State governorship election held on August 15.
While receiving the certificate, the governor also announced plans to establish a N500 million fund to support victims of election-related violence and their families.
He called on residents to put political differences aside and focus on peace and development.
The identities of those behind the attack and their motive remain unknown, while security agencies continue to investigate the incident.
