Egypt Beat Australia to Reach World Cup Round of 16

Egypt made history on Friday by beating Australia 4-2 on penalties to reach the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time. Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 13th minute, but Mohamed Hany scored an own goal early in the second half to level the match.

With no winner after 120 minutes, the game went to a penalty shootout.

Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the winning penalty, while captain Mohamed Salah also converted his spot-kick.

An emotional Salah described the victory as historic and praised his teammates for handling the pressure on football’s biggest stage.

Egypt will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16 after becoming only the second African team to reach that stage of the tournament.
