Public Workers Shut Down Offices Over Fuel Price, Wage Demands

Public servants across Nigeria have begun a three-day warning strike over demands for measures to reduce the pressure of rising living costs.

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) directed workers at federal, state and local government levels to join the strike, which started on Friday, October 2, and is scheduled to end on Sunday, October 4.

The workers are demanding a reduction in petrol prices to N500 per litre, a wage award and the start of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council said the action followed the Federal Government’s failure to address demands submitted to President Bola Tinubu in a September 21 letter.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has also backed the workers’ demands, including calls for measures to ease the rising cost of food, transport and other basic needs.
