Bruno Guimarães joins Arsenal in £75m transfer from Newcastle

Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazil international Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United in a deal reportedly worth £75 million.

The Premier League champions confirmed the transfer on Saturday, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the midfielder’s future.

Guimarães has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal, with an option to extend the deal for another year.

The 29-year-old midfielder leaves Newcastle after more than four years at the club.

He joined the Magpies from French side Lyon in January 2022 and quickly became one of the team’s most important players.

Guimarães also served as Newcastle captain and helped the club win the Carabao Cup in 2025, ending a long wait for a major trophy.

He made 195 appearances for Newcastle and scored 31 goals during his time at St James’ Park.

The Brazilian midfielder said leaving Newcastle was one of the toughest decisions of his career but explained that he wanted a new challenge and an opportunity to compete for more trophies.

Arsenal had been interested in Guimarães for several years.

The club eventually reached an agreement with Newcastle over a £75 million transfer fee earlier this week before completing the deal.

Newcastle had initially been reluctant to sell their captain.

The club’s sporting director, Ross Wilson, said the transfer was not part of Newcastle’s original plans for the summer.

However, Guimarães made it clear that he wanted to leave, forcing the club to consider the offer.

At Arsenal, Guimarães is expected to strengthen an already competitive midfield that includes Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard and Martin Zubimendi.

Arsenal sporting officials have praised his ability to contribute both defensively and in attack, as well as his experience at the highest level.

The move represents one of Arsenal’s biggest signings as the club prepares for another season of competing for major domestic and European honours.

For Newcastle, Guimarães’ departure marks the end of an important chapter, with the Brazilian having become a popular figure among the club’s supporters since arriving in 2022.
